3 Ideas to custom design your Sportswear

Are you entering a new team to your local sports league? Trying to find inspiration for a sportswear design that sets you apart from the other teams?

Custom designing your team’s uniform gives you ultimate creativity and the opportunity to communicate and portray what your club represents.

Here are three ways to help decide on the design of your jersey.

1. Find inspiration in your values

What sets you apart from other teams in the community or neighbourhood that you belong to. This should translate into the colours you wear and the mascot that represents you.

For inspiration, look towards the values and people in your community. What does your community stand for? What is your local area known for?

Upon AFL debut in 2011, the Gold Coast Suns boasted a red and gold jersey. While most footy teams have an animal as their mascot and logo, the Suns chose to represent something more specific to the club origins. That is, of course, the beautiful, warm weather associated with the Queensland city. The Gold Coast is known as one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations due to its sun and coastal vibes. So, when presented with a mix of other Australian teams, whose cities and suburbs give other meanings, the Gold Coast Suns decided to represent one of their best qualities through the nature of their team.

When brainstorming what your community represents, it helps to look at your local heroes for inspiration. This is especially relevant for jerseys during special rounds.

In the 2018 AFL Anzac round, Collingwood’s black and white stripes featured names and archival photos of ex-players who fought in the First World War, honouring their local heroes.

It’s important to find uniqueness in your community and apply it to the uniform your team represents.

2. Stick to tradition

You’ll notice that many junior teams look up to professional leagues for inspiration. They align their values with the teams and are essentially recycling what’s familiar to the sport and what already works well. This includes team colours, mascots, and songs.

For example, the Elizabeth Eagles took inspiration from the West Coast Eagles, while the Lockleys Demons took inspiration from the Melbourne Football Club, in the Adelaide Footy League.

This allows your team to give a nod to the tradition of the sport.

3. Unified, but with flexible options

A team is unified by the colours they wear. However, when ordering custom uniform, it’s important to consider flexibility, due to the different people who will be wearing them. Ordering a range of sizes is essential.

Additionally, depending on the sport, you should consider providing the sportswear in both short sleeve and long sleeve options. This allows the players to choose what type of uniform they feel most comfortable in, allowing them to perform their best. Boosted team morale leads to greater results.
