FIFA World Cup jersey sponsorships are big business. For all the marketers out there, it has become a branding tournament amongst the sponsors. Of the 32 nations competing in Russia, 8 different clothing brands were sponsored.
Adidas
Adidas was the leading kit supplier at the 2018 World Cup representing 12 nations. It was the first company to put its brand logo on the World Cup and has been the dominant national team sponsor for decades. Spain, Argentina and the defending champions Germany are amongst the 12 team contingent that wore the three stripes. Nike supplied 10 nations and enjoyed a slight edge over Adidas followed by Puma with five smaller brands. Nike is on track to overcome soccer juggernaut and archrival Adidas in the closely watched jersey sponsorship battle. As Nike decorates the outfits of Brazil, France, and England it is becoming the preferred brand.
Puma
Puma supplied 3 nations which were Senegal, Switzerland, and Uruguay. Historically Puma has done well with World Cup sponsorships in 2006, 2010, and 2014 with 12, 7, and 8 teams respectively.
New Balance
New Balance supplied 2 nations, namely Costa Rica and Panama. After experiencing 2 successful years, New Balance took part in their first World Cup. New Balance has enjoyed an excellent start to the football sponsorship industry, becoming the official sponsors of back to back Scottish champions Celtic, the successful Spanish side Seville and the Champions League finalists, Liverpool.
Umbro
Umbro sponsored 2 teams. Umbro’s Double Diamonds featured on the jerseys of Peru and Serbia. Since the 1974 tournament, Umbro added more teams at every tournament with the exception of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. They have sponsored 22 teams over the course of the tournament history with England and Scotland being their primary sponsored nations.
Errea
Errea sponsored Iceland in the 2018 World Cup. Iceland Jersey was worn with pride for the first time. The jersey was Icelandic blue and
Hummel
Hummel sponsored Denmark and has appeared at 4 World Cups. The Danish company was the national team sponsor from 1926 to 2004 and again from 2016 to the present. It was the team’s jersey for the Red-White at 1986, 1998, 2002 World Cups and again for the 2018 World Cup in Russia
Uhlsport
Uhlsport supported the National Team of Tunisia to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Uhlsport, despite its small Tunisian market, has grown as a brand in Africa and has established a strong reputation.
