What is Sublimation?
Normally when printing on a surface, there is usually a step that involves water or liquid. Sublimation is actually the process of turning solid into a gas without going through the liquid phase by using a chemical reaction.
In order to create sublimated sportswear, a digital printer is first needed to create the image or design onto a sublimation transfer paper with the ink. The paper is then placed onto a heat press along with the sportswear and it will be exposed to extremely high heats reaching more than 200°C.
The exposure to heat allows the ink to transfer from the paper to the material directly from solid to gas. No liquid state.
Once the ink is in gas form, they are able to permeate the fibres of the sportswear and stay in there. After heat is removed from the equation, the ink left inside starts to solidify and is locked in permanently.
The high heat also serves a secondary purpose where it helps open up the pores of the sportswear so that the ink can get in easily. And once the heat is removed, it closes the pores as well. This is how sublimated sportswear achieves its high-quality look and design.
